The self-taught practitioner
In many activities, being self-taught is the rule. For example, most people are self-taught negotiators, or decision-makers, or listeners: until recently, few resources were available to teach those skills.
Yet, as we know from observing self-taught swimmers and golfers (for example), those who are self-taught tend to make errors in their technique: the self-taught swimmer will expend energy in keeping his head above water, or the self-taught golfer will not keep her left arm straight in the swing.
A good coach, who knows proper techniques through experience and study, cannot make an average performer into an unmatched star, but simply in correcting the common errors can quickly bring an average self-taught performer to, say, the 80-percentile, especially in competition whose field contains many who are self-taught.
