The Refill-Not-Landfill project: next step
It started simply enough: use a refillable bottle instead of buying water in disposable bottles. The next step was to find a “good” refillable bottle: one that allowed one-hand operation, was cute, and fit the cup holder.
Then I discover that The Wife finds that the taste of the water in disposable bottles is better than that of our (filtered) tap water. So I remember my experience of 45 years ago in brewing beer and the water treatment added to the tap water. I do a little searching and find MoreBeer.com, and from them order packets of instant Burton-on-Trent water and instant Dortmund water: a packet of powder to add to regular water to produce the famed water. Those, along with a little lactic acid and a measuring pipette.
So the packets are for 6 gallons (US and not Imperial gallons, I presume — where’s the metric system when you need it?): 768 fluid oz. Our water bottles are 25 oz., 3.3% of that. One packet weighs 1.3 oz, so I use .04 oz. Hmm. I judge that to be one pinch. Add to that .13 ml of the acid—say, a drop.
We’ll give it a go. Refill Not Landfill, here we come!

I’ve been brewing beer since January, and I’m really enjoying it so far. But tell me: since I’m already into DE shaving, what other hobby awaits me in the future?

LOL. Well, let’s see: Go (Baduk), sabre fencing (perhaps), fountain pens and italic handwriting, cooking, movies, the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian (to be read in order, starting with Master and Commander), cats, …
There, that’ll keep you busy.

Ah, yes: Esperanto. And three-cushion billiards, come to think of it.

I remember also bicycles, piano and tap dancing. Be careful Ben, the list is virtually unlimited.

Well, I’ve replaced sabre fencing with about a decade of judo. I already have cooking, I just bought a bicycle, and my girlfriend and I have two cats. *sigh* I’ll see if I can find anyone in the yellow pages who teaches piano, tap dancing, and Esperanto simultaneously.
As I’m sure you understand, one can only be involved in so many hobbies at one time. Currently, I’m working on some gymnastics skills, Indian cooking, gardening (winding down with the weather), brewing, and starting to look for houses. BUT, I have Go on the list for sometime in the future. I was just unaware it would have to share time with fountain pens and three-cushion billiards.

Ah, that reminds me of another: Aikido, though I’m no longer active. But I really liked it.
Yeah, I generally do really new interests seriatim, taking up another as the old one either winds down (aikido) or just becomes incorporated into daily life (italic handwriting). The good thing about the shaving interest is that it’s more or less self-renewing, since I shave daily.

Back on the original topic, I keep a bottle of pasturized lemon juice in the fridge and just add a little shot to the water in my bottles. Not only does it help the taste, but nice for working out — the lemon makes one salivate a little more.

I was thjnking today that imported bottled water should be banned outright. The environmental cost of transporting water (WATER!) is tremendous. Fiji? Perrier? Can anyone really say that they can’t live without these?
