Climate-change deniers conference

with 3 comments

The usual suspects are behind it:

An article in the Independent links funding for the “2008 International Conference on Climate Change” held in New York earlier this month to tobacco and oil companies. As an earlier Spin noted, the global warming skeptics conference was organized by the Heartland Institute think tank. Heartland has opposed scientific consensus on both secondhand tobacco smoke and climate change. Heartland claims on its website that no energy industry money was used to support the conference, but did not address tobacco industry funding. Still, a substantial number of conference sponsors — including the Competitive Enterprise Institute, Independent Institute, Americans for Tax Reform, Frontiers of Freedom and Citizens’ Alliance for Responsible Energy — have received support from energy or tobacco companies, or both. The Heartland Institute itself has received funding from Exxon and Philip Morris.

  1. This might as well be the phrenology and phlogiston conference for all the “science” that will be present.

  2. Since when does it make sense to give the back of the hand to citizens who happen to work in energy industries and to applaud the work of those whose income depends on government grants to “prove” man is causing global warming?

So far, these “grant takers” have cost the world over forty billion dollars and there is not one shred of evidence CO2 is causing climate change. They point to computer models and say “see, the models predict warming.” Of course they do, and none of them predicted that global warming would stop in 1998 and the earth to start cooling in 2000. Sorry, in science when the facts contradict the theory it is imperative to drop the theory.

So far, the “grant takers” have lied, obfuscated, fiddled their models, and even government agencies like NASA have published studies which are completely false.

So, we have those who did predict the cooling by using solar observations which correctly predicted the cooling. And, they were not sponsored by energy companies either.

So, what’s the conclusion? The global warming partisans are wrong, they are dishonest, and their motives are completely suspect. They are after money from grants, commissions on control schemes, and are radical leftists who want to control industry and abolish America’s free enterprise system.

So, less politely, they are committing fraud.

  3. Arthur, you are wrong. Look at the graphs here. You’ll see that global temperatures have continued to climb. In addition, the Arctic icepack has considerably diminished in summer extent and in winter thickness since 2000. At the link you can find the science that refutes other common arguments from global warming deniers.

By the way, no one is giving the “back of the hand” to those who work in energy-intensive industries. Global warming is a problem that affects us all, including those working in those industries. The leaders of those industries (coal and oil) are, however, guilty of fighting the science in a way strong reminiscent of the way the leaders of the tobacco industry fought the science of the effects of smoking.
