Gem G-Bar: a true gem
First, of course, the TOBS Herbal Preshave Gel, and letting it sit for a while. Then Floris London JF shaving soap and the inestimable Rooney Style 2 Finest—and a fine, thick, copious lather. The Rooney Style 2 Finest is definitely superior to the Rooney Heritage Alibaba Large (at least for me).
I’ve been using Ted Pella Teflon (PTFE) coated blades in the Gem, but at Giovanni’s suggestion I bought some of the Gem Blue Star blades, which are, after all, made for shaving, not for lab work. And he’s right: I did get a better shave. In fact, quite a good shave, especially after the oil pass with All Natural Shaving Oil. Having only one shaving edge felt a little odd, and certainly it requires more frequent rinsing of the blade, but the Gem G-Bar is a really fine razor. Very nice to use it again.
I owe the use of the G-Bar this morning to this post on the blog Adventures in Wet Shaving.

My Gem G-Bar is one of the few razors left in my arsenal after all these years of playing at gourmet shaving. I also enjoy the shaving experience tremendously when I finally do come back to it. It’s just an amazingly solid tool that gives you a thick almost sword-like feel to it’s shaving action.
In fact, I was just thinking about your previous mentions of Giovanni’s Gem blade recommendations. I guess the synchronicity of this post is finally telling me to hop onto his site and order a few…
Off I go…

Hey LeisureGuy,
Thanks for the link. Looks like now I have to go check out these Blue Star blades. More than once I’ve felt like a lab experiment, so the ptfe blades are a good fit. But sometimes it’s just shaving, so maybe a Blue Star is the ticket.
My gem has been serving me well this week. I’ll give it another round next week. Then, maybe back to a DE, or maybe not…
Giovanni hit my blog too, and now I’m off to see his site.
