Ogallala morning

The guys at Shaving Essentials sent me a few products to try. In return, I’ll post my reviews here. This morning I tried two: the Goodfella razor, from New Zealand, and the Genuine Ogallala Bay Rum & Sandalwood Shaving Stick, from Ogallala, Nebraska. I already had the aftershave—I like the Ogallala products, and not just because Ogallala is fun to say. They have a very nice bay rum fragrance, and the shave stick produced a high-quality and generous lather with the Rooney Style 2 brush: fragrant and thick.

The Goodfella razor is an open-comb design, and the Goodfella design, like the Merkur open comb razors, places the blades edge directly atop the comb. On the right, you see the Gillette NEW, which has a drop-shoulder design that lifts the blade slightly above the comb. (Click the photo and then click the resulting image for full size, and you’ll see what I mean.) From this angle, you may not recognize the make of blade in the Goodfella, but it’s a new Wilkinson.

The razor has a definite “feel”, not quite same as the Gillette NEW. But the shave was superb. I did a three pass shave, and every pass did its job, ending with a perfect smoothness. Good blade and good razor do a good job. The razor wasn’t slippery, despite the smooth chrome finish.

Finishing with the Ogallala aftershave was a pleasure. A very good shave indeed.

  1. I have been meaning to try out the Kiwi GoodFella. Though I have true love for the Weishi (manufacturer of our starter kits), I am happy to see that there is another source of handles outside of Germany, India, and China.

I love Ogallala’s products as well, the Bay Rum is delicious!
