I find my attention wandering from politics: The Democrats have become Republicans, the Republicans have gone batshit crazy, and the entire edifice seems to be passing into the hands of business and industry. I’m keeping an eye on it, but my interest and heart are not in it right now.
I couldn’t agree more. I have always know, of course, that American Democrats are actually center-right compared to the rest of the free world. Knowing this tempers my expectations. But the degree to which they slavishly serve corporate interests is appalling.
And, yes, the Republican party has been taken over by the crazies. It started in the 90s and has gotten worse since then. They have elevated fringe to mainstream and there’s no grownups left to say anything about it.

Agreed. Well put. Although as a Canadian my perspective on your system may feel less legitimate.
