A smooth St. James shave

with 3 comments

A very smooth shave for the mid-term exam, though I don’t believe we will actually be graded on the quality of our shave. TOBS St. James generated a fine lather with the Simpson Emperor 3 Super brush. The (rhodium-plated) Gillette President carried a Personna 14 blade, which did a fine job except at the polishing stage. After the shave, I put the blade in my little homemade blade safe, the razor ready for a new blade on next use. That blade safe is getting close to full after several years’ use.

A splash of the St. James aftershave, and I’m ready for the test. I hope.

  1. This is the perfect bottle for a man’s needs, isn’t it?
In both form and function, at least for me.
Although I’m also crazy about the function of the atomizer, it does not look like this.

  2. I got an Emperor III for Christmas a couple of months back. I requested it because I like the handle and wanted to try a Simpson. Unfortunately, as it turns out, most of the Emperors available these days are of the two-band variety. Perhaps I shouldn’t rush to judgement, but it seems *too* stiff to me even after many uses. I have an older three band Rooney Heritage Emillion which I vastly prefer. It’s got good backbone for soaps (soft tips too) but doesn’t take the stiffness to as much of an extreme as my Emperor. Live and learn, I guess. Yours appears to be of the older, three band variety. I think you have the better brush.

  3. Very interesting, Dandaman. All three of the Emperors I had (I sold the “1″ but still have the “2″ and of course the “3″ is pictured) were highly satisfactory, but I’m familiar with that too-stiff thing: it’s as though the bristles are so densely packed that there’s no room for lather and little flex in the brush. These are definitely not like that, and some of the large Omega Silvertips are at the opposite (though still, in the case of the Omegas, highly usable) extreme: lush and soft, but still doing a great job.
