Taking my life in a new direction

with 11 comments

I’ve decided that I will make one of those life changes one reads about. I’m going for an innovation I call “the uncrowded refrigerator.” I realized I had a problem when I would lose food in the fridge underneath other food, and would discover that as I piled in more food from a trip to the grocery store.

At first I rationalized by telling myself, “Produce is bulky. It’s not your fault. Besides, some of it is the CSA.”

But the problem well antedates my CSA participation. And the freezer is just as bad.

I’m going for the stereotypical post-college bachelor fridge: a jar holding two olives, a half-empty jar of mustard, and a quart of milk. That, plus just enough food for two days of meals, say.

So right now I’m eating through what’s there, freezer and fridge, buying only what I need to accompany it.

  1. Geez…no left overs ? You’re actually going to go through the nearly impossible task of cooking just for one or two hmmm… that’s going to be downright difficult….good luck !

  2. That’s the ideal. It will fray around the edges, but I definitely need improvement over the current mode.

  3. I suggest you sell the fridge you have now and purchase a short and thin Japanese style fridge. This way, at least your fridge will have that ‘Full to the brim’ feel.

I bet you an ‘Akita’ apple that when you have that ‘Dorm room’ fridge look with the current one, you are going to go through major withdrawal.

  5. Now Steve is actually on the right track ! Go real french and just dump the fridge all together, that’s a great concept !

Just think of the miles of walking from the baker to the butcher, Cheese shop, Veggies, the Wine store and then lugging all that back up the hill….it will do wonders for your waist line…no doubt !!

  6. That of course is the real paradox, how the French stay slim eating all this amazing food….no tempeh there brother :-)

And, you are right Nick, they do it by walking or riding a bike everywhere, and watching very little TV )I mean how much Jerry Lewis can you take?).

My daughter did her graduate work in Holland for two years and dropped 40 pounds, all the time eating the greasy, fatty, cheese-drenched, Dutch food.

  7. When I was a kid we would spend the summer in Greece when we could afford to (did it 3 times). Stayed 2 months with my grandmother. She had no plumbing, no grocery store, no TV, no fridge.
And yet, we managed to survive for 2 months eating only fresh food; can you imagine that?

  8. It is tragic to see how the Western (read American) lifestyle catches up with even the best cultures. My mother used to say: “The good will much more easily gravitate to the bad than the reverse”. It’s ironic that Greece today has the highest obesity rate in Europe and 6th highest in the world (USA is #1, Canada #12). Also the highest smoking rate in the world!

  9. Just to keep it all in context – Consider that a number of years ago, the dramatic increase in world Copper prices was suggested to be directly linked to the demand by China of western appliances – refrigerator and air conditioners – requiring Copper.

If the Chinese Mama demands from Hubby the conveniences of western society, then we can assume that it won’t take long for the Chinese to catch up to the USA in Obesity, after all, to enjoy refrigerators and Air conditioning one tends to stay home more often, i.e. entertain at home with air conditioning for guests and a full fridge of preserved or fermenting back shelf food.

  10. FYI, China’s obesity rate has climbed from 11% to like 17% in the last ten years. That’s a 6% increase on 1.2 Billion people, or twice the population of Canada became obese in 10 years.

  11. Before it was all Bikes and walking in China, right ? Now it’s all cars and air conditioning just like in the US, so go figure… maybe LG is right about the big bad Monster Fridge ! ….it’s the root of all dietary evil, it’s destroying America !!

Look at India everyone’s thin they have no fridges really to speak of, not yet anyway, It’s so bloody hot there (been to N. Delhi a couple of times) they have no air conditioning either and they are perfectly content and thin. Are they getting obese too ? could this be the real pandemic ? The Chinese just bought Maytag..OMG !!!

gotta go grab a snack …
