Brush program for next four weeks

with 3 comments

I’ve decided to devote the next four weeks to shaving brushes:

Week 1: Synthetics
Week 2: Boar
Week 3: Horsehair
Week 4: Badger

Other themes as they occur to me.

I also play requests.

  1. To complete the theme why not consider a week with brushless and a week with canned foam. I often use Gillette FOAMY when hurried after a shower. It kind of gives me a standard reference.

  2. Hi Michael -the theme on Mondays at Simply Shaving is the “Mourning” shave where you try to use discontinued products whose loss you are mourning. The possibilities are virtually endless (which is unfortunate really).

  3. I just wrote this in the new preface this morning:

I mentioned above that some vendors have closed their doors since the previous edition. Many of the vendors mentioned in the Appendix vendor list are small operations that depend totally on one or two people. Naturally enough, such businesses are vulnerable to disruption and sudden closure from any number of causes: health problems of the proprietor or a family member, financial exigencies (or the opposite: the great Razor and Brush on-line store had to close when its owner, who ran the business as a sideline, was promoted to a more demanding job), and so forth.

The point is that these businesses, which generally offer exceptional handcrafted products of high quality, have a certain cherry-blossom quality: they bloom briefly and their products may be available only for a few seasons. I now treasure some of the irreplaceable soaps, creams, and equipment that I purchased a few years ago from businesses now gone, never to return.

If you like some products offered by these artisans and small-business owners, buy promptly. You will get something that you can use and enjoy, possibly long after the business is gone.
