If I had a backyard, I would most definitely have… backyard chickens
I really like chickens. They’re always so serious, yet somehow silly. Take a look at the promise of this Cool Tool, read it, and tell me you wouldn’t like to have a few backyard hens clucking about, watching for grasshopper treats.

That is a great link! Especially the part about double-layering the chicken wire at the bottom. I used to raise backyard chickens as a boy, as did many of our neighbors, and it is lots of fun. The eggs are really good, too.
Having looked briefly at Raising Chickens for Dummies at a local bookstore, it seems like a very useful learning tool. There might be books at the local library that are equally good, though, as raising chickens isn’t rocket science. Stromberg’s (www.strombergschickens.com) has some informative books and a huge array of poultry rearing supplies, chicks and eggs, should you find a place to raise them. Some community gardens allow people to raise chickens. Maybe there is one near you that does? Sustainable Pacific Grove might be able to provide information on such resources in the Monterey area.
