  1. Fascinating…..but if I could carry steel wool and a battery…I might as well carry some matches!!! 🙂

  2. Well, I thought it was more a science demo. But it does look like a very quick way to start a fire—the steel seems to burn very hot—so it might be worth packing along: better than matches.

  3. I learned that one when I was in Boy Scouts. More recently, I’ve learned another, stranger way.

    I tried it last winter, and I did get the paper to smolder, but perhaps it was too cold/windy to take off. Still, it was definitely an interesting experiment. As for the methodology, I picked up a makeup (magnifying) mirror at a yard sale to show this trick to my young cousins.
