Blackwater’s immunity really works

with 2 comments

Earlier this month, Blackwater USA was involved in the fatal shooting of 11 Iraqi civilians. While the Iraqi government swiftly condemned the contractor, the Bush administration has continued to back Blackwater’s story that it was “defensive fire.”

Last Thursday, Gen. Peter Pace told reporters, “Blackwater has been a contractor in the past with the department and could certainly be in the future.” The next day, that future was already here. The Pentagon had issued a new list of contracts, including one worth $92 million to Presidential Airways, the “aviation unit of parent company Blackwater.” From the release:

Presidential Airways, Inc., an aviation Worldwide Services company (d/b/a Blackwater Aviation), Moyock, N.C., is being awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) type contract for $92,000,000.00. The contractor is to provide all fixed-wing aircraft, personnel, equipment, tools, material, maintenance and supervision necessary to perform passenger, cargo and combi Short Take-Off and Landing air transportation services between locations in the Area of Responsibility of Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. This contract was competitively procured and two timely offers were received. The performance period is from 1 Oct. 2007 to 30 September 2011.

Government officials have repeatedly ignored Blackwater’s transgressions. Senior Iraqi officials “repeatedly complained to U.S. officials” about Blackwater’s “alleged involvement in the deaths of numerous Iraqis, but the Americans took little action to regulate the private security firm.”

Next week. Rep. David Price (D-NC) plans to introduce legislationto extend the reach of U.S. civil courts to include security contractors in Iraq.”

  1. Its a shame that the democratic part of congress is using Blackwater as a platform. It shows how low they will go to win the election for President. They talk about us Veterans as if we are under work and over paid. There action toward Americans is keep people down and under control. They robbed children of an education when they seen how they could redirect lotto money in to there pocket instead of the class room. The America I fought for is not one that puts illegal aliens before poor Americans and Disabled Veterans. If there so apauled and feel that the military is a whiping pony they can disrespect, mistreat and underpay. Let the Airforce,Navy,Army and Marines take a week off. Then democrats will get a taste of what they really control.(NOTHING). We don’t need a goverment that taxes us, tells us how they will spend and save our money and sells us out to other countrys for there own personal gain. They for get who they serve and pays there out of site paychecks and personal expences. Then have the nerve to talk down to the people like they don’t answer to the people that put them in office and waste our tax money on there personal projects and plans for America. Misuse of money that is exstorted from Americans by threat of prison or use of force is getting old real fast! I was born in the day time not yesterday. It is amazing how much money Hollywood make off the backs of Veterans and how litte they give back. I know I was at West Los Angeles VA when shooting movies at the VA took priority over my treatment thanks to Bill Clinton X President.

  2. Tony, you’re incorrect on a number of points. It wasn’t the Democrats who cut military pay, it was George Bush. It’s not the Democrats who have demanded ever-longer tours of duty with ever-shorter rest periods, it’s George Bush. James Webb (Democratic Senator from Virginia) tried to pass a bill to make sure the military arranged rest periods of the same length as combat duty—the GOP fought it.

The illegal aliens are indeed being kept out to a degree not seen before. As a result, crops are rotting on the ground in California because there’s no one to pick them. Is that good?

The worst treatment of veterans, at Walter Reed Hospital, has taken place under George Bush, not Bill Clinton. Indeed, the government under Bill Clinton ran much effectively and efficiently under Clinton than Bush. For example, under Clinton, the head of FEMA actually knew about disaster management. Do you remember New Orleans? It’s still a wreck and disaster.

Tony, you need to do more reading and more study. Right now your points don’t stand up. And I don’t understand what you’re saying about Blackwater. Do you think the mercenaries in Iraq are doing a fine job?
