Interesting idea: lab notebook becomes blog

with one comment

I like this approach. It occurs to me that it would work in other disciplines as well: putting one’s work out there for people (e.g., classmates) to see and comment on, and thus advance one’s learning

  1. I dream about science becoming a place where this might work. Alas, the article presents a big caveat:

“Mind you, her lab happens to focus on a research area that is not too competitive, so the relative merits of what her lab’s blogging is obviously subjected to this important nuance.”

Unfortunately, for every opportunity to “advance one’s learning” allowed by this sort of open access, there’s 100 opportunities for an unscrupulous researcher on the other side of the world to scoop your data or steal your idea. And in the uber-competitive medically relevant fields, you just can’t put yourself and your years of work at that sort of a risk.
