I’m currently re-reading with great enjoyment the novel Kim, by Rudyard Kipling. What a wonderful book it is.

And I’m also reading Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, which looks to be an excellent fantasy.

I’m also wanting to re-read some classics, specifically War and Peace and Don Quixote, both in new translations.

I tried The Brothers Karamazov, but on this reading I find it overwrought. Maybe I’ll try again later.

  1. KIM is indeed wonderful. I didn’t read it until I was 75 years old. I was compelled to re-read parts of it a few times. Similar to my experience in reading ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE.

  2. Just downloaded KIM (free!) to my Kindle. Looking forward to reading it!

  3. I actually tried reading Kim on the Kindle, but the version was filled with errors, starting with the poetry at the beginning of the first chapter, in which a line was erroneously repeated. I finally turned to a printed book. In fact, it’s the old Heritage edition with wonderful illustrations that add a lot. Terrific story.

  5. I bought a new “fun” book called Rules for My Unborn Son by Walker Lamond, which is full of great fatherly tidbits like “Men with facial hair have something to hide” and “If you attend a late-night after-party, have an exit strategy.” In the back are two checklists; “Required listening” and “Essential Reading” for boys. This could be a good go-to for those classics. The Brothers Karamazov is on there, as well as Kon-Tiki, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and 1984. I’m definitely using it as a personal checklist.

  6. I hope that Kim is on there as well.
