De Vergulde Hand

The shave stick is De Vergulde Hand from the Netherlands, and it made an excellent lather with the Rooney Style 2. The Merkur Slant Bar with a somewhat aged Swedish Gillette blade still delivered a smooth and close shave very pleasurably. And TOBS St. James was a fine finish.

  1. I have not yet come across this soap. Is it a tallow based soap?

  2. I actually don’t know. On the tub of soap I have, the ingredients include sodium stearate, potassium stearate, sodium cocoate, and potassium cocoate. Does that help?

  3. That sounds like a non-tallow soap. If it were a tallow soap it would list Sodium Tallowate or Potassium Tallowate. How was the cushion on this soap? Some of the non tallow soaps (e.g., Institut Karite, Cyril Salter and Pre de Provence) have a surprising amount of cushion although still not quite up to the standards of a good tallow soap.

  4. Cushion seemed fine to me. I’ll try the bowl soap tomorrow.

  5. I’ll have to keep my eye out for this one. I am always interested in new soaps. Thank you for the heads-up.

  6. They also make a shaving cream (in a tube).

  7. Have you tried the cream as well? If so, what did you think of it?

  8. Not bad. I’ll send you the tube if you like.
