Good quotation

with 2 comments

I’m reading Cultural Amnesia: Necessary Memories from History and the Arts, by Clive James, and came across this quotation by Peter Altenberg from Fechsung:

There are only two things that can destroy a healthy man: love trouble, ambition, and financial catastrophe. And that’s already three things, and there are a lot more.

  1. Love trouble and a mans destruction –

    Green-Eyed Jealousy

or Green-eyed Monster. Expressions used by Shakespeare (Merchant of Venice, iii. 2; Othello, iii. 3). As cats, lions, tigers, and all the green-eyed tribe “mock the meat they feed on,” so jealousy mocks its victim by loving and loathing it at the same time.
Source: Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, E. Cobham Brewer, 1894

The vast majority of shootings in the USA caused by Jealous rage have been male perpetrators. Women tend to be able to just shut off, like a light switch, where males just can’t seem to let go.

  2. Act III Scene II from the Merchant of Venice if one would like to read on the “Green Eyed Monster” (Jealousy):
