Shaving soaps question

with 14 comments

I’m curious about whether my stash of shaving soaps is of any value to anyone. I have an enormous amount, many of them barely-used, purchased so I could test them in order to know from my own direct experience what I was writing in the shaving book. But I’m in the process of dispossessing my apartment of its clutter in preparation for an eventual move.

But there’s a problem with shaving soaps: individual sale of slightly-used soaps is too difficult, yet simply discarding them seems horribly wasteful. I’m thinking I might fill a Priority Mail flat-rate box with a selection of soaps at some low price—$3/tub or puck—and sell that as a “sight-unseen” deal. But would anyone be interested? The shipping would be $10.85 for the box. (I recently shipped a package Parcel Post and it came out to just over $11: it would have been money ahead to go with the Priority Mail flat rate. Thus the shipping choice here.)

When I get around to razors and brushes, those seem suitable for eBay, but approach doesn’t make sense for the soaps.

So: what do you think/advise?

  1. I like that idea. A box of soaps to open up and be surprised. A grab box of soaps.

  2. I assume $10.85 is just within the US?

  3. Good point: yes, it is. And given the shipping charges, I doubt that this will work internationally. I apologize for thinking provincially.

  4. You could probably sell your entire stash at The Nook. I’d buy it if it was convenient.

  6. Unfortunally, living in EU would probably cost me too much on shipping, but I would sooooo gladly buy some soaps and/or creams that are not available here or too expensive due to shipping. ( MW, QED, MB and QCS.)

I am soooo jelous of the one who is gonna get that!

  8. Maybe you shouldn’t leave out the EU/UK we may still want some of the soaps over here. Yes the postage may be high but please remember there are some products that you’ve used and recommended that unfortunately the artisan producers won’t ship to the UK. I’ve looked on several web sites only to hit that disappointment in the small print no shipping outside US/Canada. It’s not that much to the UK, I’ve ordered several items particularly from Al’s (The Bomb) and found the postage reasonable he always advises the optimum number for a set price

  9. Good points, and I will look further into this. I am right now collecting info only, since I am hip deep in reorganizing and the like. When I do this, I’ll notify everyone via a shaving post that will provide order details.

Many thanks for the responses. I wasn’t clear whether the idea is even worth pursuing.

  10. One definitely must talk to Larry about shipping costs. I have ordered a lot from USA and his shipping rates through stamps.com were accelent!

  11. People have had good luck with mystery box approach on the shaving forums. But you might just fin a nearby wet shaver who will come over and buy them all.

  12. When I tire of a shaving soap I pry it out of the tub and use it as a shower soap bar. They all give luxurious performance when used this way.

  13. I would be interested as well!

  14. I’d be so grateful to get a box of soaps, finances only allow crappy soap purchases at that cost. Thanks for considering!
