Tabula Rasa, Rod Neep, and the Red-Tipped Super Speed

with 7 comments

Today saw another excellent shave. Tabula Rasa is a German shaving cream and the Dark Lavender fragrance is extremely nice. With the Rod Neep (Pens of the Forest) brush shown, I immediately worked up a fine lather, and the red-tipped Super Speed with a Schick Plus Platinum blade delivered a smooth shave. The acoustics today seemed excellent, and the sound of the stubble’s being cut was distinct. A splash of Mr. Taylor’s aftershave, and I’m ready for the weekend.

  1. If you had to keep one, Dr Selby’s or Tabula Rasa, which would you pick?

  2. I really don’t know. They’re both excellent. Tabula Rasa is more like a shaving cream, Dr. Selby’s more like a soap.

  3. I like the idea. So many people in the shaving groups have gained so mich insight from your efforts. I think they will go over well. Be sure the folks on WE know about it. I’m sure there are more than a few who will be interested.

  4. Have they changed the formulation? I remember that Tabula Rasa needed to be lathered by hand. Do you do that? Also do you feel the special moisturizing effect after the shave as many people say.

Finally have you tried any other scent in TR?

  5. I have no idea of whether or when the formulation has been changed. I don’t understand what you mean “lathered by hand”—all the shaving creams and soaps require that except the non-lathering ones. It seems moisturizing enough, but I am not particularly sensitive to that issue. And this is my only tub of Tabula Rasa.

  6. Thanks for the answer. The “by hand” comment actually should have been palm lathering as I read in an article. Is the consistency of the cream similar to CF?

  7. I’ve never tried palm lathering. I use a brush. Tabula Rasa is somewhat firmer than Castle Forbes, as I recall.
