As smooth as a slant shave

with 6 comments

SOTD 12 Aug 2013

A perfectly smooth result: two-day stubble, good prep, three passes of my slant with a new Astra Keramik Platinum new blade: a great way to start the week.

I wash my beard with the lanolin version of Jlocke98’s formula, then easily worked up a fine lather with the Omega Pro 48 (but the 20248, rather than the 10048, which is unbanded). This brush really did seem to break in immediately, and it has excellent lather capacity. The lather from How To Grow A Moustache’s shaving soap is superb, and the large format puck aids loading.

The iKon Slant is a pussycat with the right blade, and I got a totally comfortable shave. A splash of Annik Goutal’s Eau de Sud, and the week opens.

My current collection of slants:

  1. Michael – Do you know when Ikon will release its slant for sale?

  2. I would say Real Soon Now. He will announce on the iKon Facebook page and via iKon Twitter feed, so you might want to subscribe to one of those. The usual thing is for him to sell out fast. You can also check the Dealers list at and see whether one of those would accept a pre-order.

  3. Thank you for pushing me to try a slant(through your book and blog). To paraphrase you – this is truly one product that “works exactly as advertised”; especially for tough beard+think skins like me. Today was my 2nd shave with a slant and it has been a revelation. Nothing cuts whiskers more easily. So far I’m amazed. I might have to get a few more slants….

  4. Isn’t it amazing? I guess I can see why many guys simply find it hard to believe that it would make much difference. I have 7 or 8 slants now. is going to announce a new slant in early January. Delighted that you’ve found it good.

  5. It *IS* amazing. I think the under-appreciation for the slant partially stems from the fact that there aren’t really that many truly thick’n’dense beard+sensitive skin guys out there – especially amongst the prominent shaving reviewers. Yes the slant is efficient for everyone – but for guys like me it’s a revelation. Of course, – you have been saying exactly that for a while. I wonder why the slant concept never made it to the cartridge format….

  6. Well, the complete focus of the cartridge razor is profitability, not quality of shave. A slant cartridge would be like putting a silk shirt on a hog. If P&G were truly interested in quality of shave, they would have gone a very different direction. What they want is profit growth through patent monopoly.
