Third shave with Mystic Water’s Indian Summer: BBS again

with 2 comments

SOTD 26 Oct 2013

Today I used a horsehair shaving brush, and again achieved easily a fine, slick lather. My Sodial with a Personna Lab Blue did a fine job, though again I had to do some blade buffing to achieve BBS, so at the end of the shave I swapped out the Personna Lab Blue that seemed to have reached the end of its life with a new Kai blade.

A good splash of Krampert’s Finest Bay Rum and the weekend begins—a weekend that involves a certain amount of cleaning up, since The Wife returns tomorrow night from her trip.

  1. I used Mystic Waters Irish Traveler today for the second or third time. When it comes to shaving soaps (and all other shaving products), I’m a firm believer in YMMV. I know you like this brand, but it does *nothing* for me. It’s not slick, and the lather doesn’t last. And it doesn’t lather particularly well in the first place. I’ve been doing wetshaving daily now for 4-5 yrs and have a collection of maybe 50- 70 brands of soap/cream. This one goes near the rear of the list. My water is supposedly nearer the soft end of the spectrum than the hard end, though maybe the soft end of the middle might be closer. I can’t help thinking you must have some of the softest water going, and it really helps you get all you can out of any particular brand. I know you like Mystic Waters, but I seem to be one of several not getting good use out of it.

  2. I haven’t used Irish Traveler, so I can’t comment on that one, but I’ve been using their Sensitive Skin soap for a while with no problems. The water here is reasonably soft, but not super soft. (The Wife moved down here from Vancouver BC and found the water here terrible, but Vancouver water is amazing.)

But, you’re right: YMMV certainly seems to hold. Have you tried other soaps I’ve recommended? (I.e., do we have any overlap in soaps we like?)
