The Above the Tie S1 and Mickey Lee’s Italian Stallion aftershave milk

SOTD 3 Sept 2015

Very fine shave today, with the Plisson HMW 12 (with a horn handle) bringing forth a fine lather from the sample of Meißner Tremonia soap, the eighth shave with this sample, which I’m starting to think may last a dozen shaves.

The ATT S1 slant head, riding on a UFO handle, did a fine job: three passes to perfect smoothness, but I did pick up one nick on my lower lip in the XTG pass—bad blade angle, I reckon. I tried the alum block as a styptic again: rinsed my face and held the block against firmly against the nick for half a minute. It did quite a good job, but still a bit of seepage, so I closed it up with My Nik Is Sealed.

A good splash of Mickey Lee Soapworks Italian Stallion aftershave milk, a fragrance I like a lot more than I thought I would from reading the description. The milk feels good and dries fast, leaving my face feeling soft and smooth.

  1. I bought myself an iKon #101 head the other day. I’ve had a few shaves with it and I’m somewhat disappointed. I find the open comb side to be milder than the closed comb; I was expecting both sides to feel the same when shaving. After performing my ATG pass, I placed my DE89 head on to my Bulldog handle and shaved ATG again. I could both feel and hear the whiskers being removed that the #101 had missed, especially on my moustache area.

I should probably shave with it for a few weeks before making any final judgements, but my first impressions are mediocre at best.

  2. Takes me 15 shaves to dial my technique to a new razor. You might want to shave with it some more before judging it.

  3. Interesting. To me both sides feel the same, and it’s highly efficient. I’ll shave with it again tomorrow. I use Personna Lab Blue blades, but of course that brand might not work so well for you. But do some blade exploration.

  4. I certainly will try some different blades.
