Boxing Day Shave Excellence with Dr. Jon’s and the Above the Tie S1

with 3 comments

SOTD 26 Dec 2015

A very fine and pleasant shave. I love the summer fragrance of Dr. Jon’s Savannah Sunrise, and the Copper Hat shaving brush produced today an excellent lather.

This morning I used my Above the Tie S1, which I think is just as good as the iKon #102. I have the S1 head riding on a UFO handle that I like a lot. (BTW, if you’ve not read Todd Oppenheimer’s article on Above the Tie in Craftsmanship magazine, I highly recommend it.)

A good splash of Floïd aftershave finishes the shave in fine style.

  1. Used my #102 for the second time today, yesterday with the Gillette 7o’clock and today with a Lab Blue. Wonderful shave both days!

A question came to mind this morning which has been addressed here previously but as is somewhat typical I don’t recall the conclusion. The question being, should soap be allowed to dry out before closeing the container?

  2. It depends on the soap, unfortunately—i.e., no general answer possible. Martin de Candre specifically states that the lid supplied is merely for shipment and should be discarded once the soap is in use so the soap can dry between shaves; also, WSP’s Rustic shaving soap advises, as I recall, that you can make the soap (which is relatively soft) get harder by leaving the lid off. OTOH, Steve of Quebec reported that the very excellent Organic Asses’ Milk shaving soap lost its mojo when he stored it sans lid. For the artisanal soaps I buy (and I buy a lot), I just replace lid after use. But I do leave the lid off on my Martin de Candre and probably will with the Rustic shave soap.

  3. I do leave the lid off both of my Saponificio Varesino soaps – Anniversary and Dolomiti – at least until I have had my morning cappuccinos. Does no harm to the soap and wonders for me! I do much the same for all
my soaps with no apparent problems.
