Interesting example of different evolutions of related memes (belts and suspenders)
The family “hold your trousers up” nowadays has two primary genera—”belt” and “suspenders”—that fared better, as memes, against other “holding your trousers up” memes (such as the genus “bib overalls,” in which the suspenders mutated to become part of the trousers). Both genus belt and genus suspenders have many species: country belts, work belts, dress belts, and so on, among the belts; and button-on v. clip-on, single back attachment vs. two back attachments, and so on among suspenders. These memes are all in a (literally) Darwinian struggle, with natural selection working at a furious pace (think one fashion season as a generation, for example). Naturally favored mutations spread quickly. Look at that fad of business-dress braces when they went extra-wide and colorful and ornate. That seemed to have been subject to natural selection fairly quickly.
