Gillette TV Special Super Speed goes to auction

TV spec side

The TV Special was made only in 1958, and (as the name implies), it was offered only on TV. It’s a very nice little Super Speed, and this one is in excellent condition. You can see it here on eBay.

  1. I just checked the link and it goes to a recipe for Lamb Shanks. Which look delicious, by the way.

  2. Oops. Fixed. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, the recipe looks interesting. Amazon does sell dried rosebuds and rose petals, rosewater is easy to find, and I’m still looking for the dried lime.

  6. The TV Special was made to promote the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports, a weekly Friday night boxing show filmed at Madison Square Garden through 1960. The market was saturated with boxing shows at the time, and Gillette’s sponsorship and razor made to promote it helped fuel Gillette sales. Razors pitched during ad time of the show sold four times better than not. I don’t know that they were only sold through the TV (send money to an address shown on screen) or if they were sold in stores with a promotional display for the Cavalcade.

  7. @Tony: Here it is. I will be making it once I track down all the ingredients.

@vmarks: My high-school marching band used the theme song of the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports for one season. This song, although played by a marching band (no strings).

  8. In 1954 another TV special SS was sold too. It resembled the 1940’s SS not the flare tip. Also made only during a single quarter of that year I believe.

  9. Two quarters, I think, for the 1954 variant.
