Tallow + Steel “Dark” and the redoubtable Baby Smooth

Tallow + Steel shaving soaps lather quite easily and require little in the way of water: two good shakes of the Fine synthetic still left a tad too much water in the brush, but I worked the excess water into the lather. Still, next time I was be even more frugal with the water for this soap. The ingredients do not include clay, you’ll note:

Stearic Acid + Tallow (from local, pasture-raised, 100% grass-fed cattle) + Water + Potassium Hydroxide + Sodium Hydroxide + Organic Castor Oil + Organic Glycerin + Organic Coconut Oil + Organic Avocado Oil + Lanolin + Silk + Essential Oils + Vitamin E

I do like the fragrance: “coffee, cocoa, ginger, and vetiver, combined with the sweetness of peppermint and benzoin.” They note, “Dark features a coffee essential oil from South America, and a cocoa absolute oil from France.”

The Baby Smooth is in the very top rank of my razors for comfort and efficiency. It’s really a remarkably good razor and I hope the rumors of its return are true. When I first tried it (on the $45 initial release), it went immediately onto my “recommended razors for novices” list. Three passes, no problems, BBS finish.

A splash of Tallow + Steel “Dark” aftershave, and I’m good to go. The aftershave also has good ingredients:

Water + Witch Hazel + Organic Aloe Vera + Organic Glycerin + Organic Licorice Root + Organic Willow Bark + Organic Cucumber + Organic Rosemary + Polyglyceryl Oleate + Radish Root Ferment + Lactobacillus + Coconut Fruit + Essential Oils

Great stuff.

  1. How is the finish on the Baby Smooth holding up? I think I’ve seen some with the black wearing off/fading. Was thinking of trying to find one, but then saw that IB might do a stainless version if I recall right.

  2. Finish has shown no problems, nor has the (same) finish of the aluminum Stealth. A stainless Baby Smooth would be nice.

  3. For those who don’t have the Baby Smooth and are interested in it, should try the Merkur 45. I found them both to be almost identical in shape/size, geometry and usage. The Baby Smooth has heavier handle than the Merkur.

I’m also hoping that Joe brings it back. He has said he is thinking about making it in Stainless.
