Fine Classic, Tallow + Steel Dark, and the iKon 102

with 3 comments

The Fine Classic synthetic has a wonderfully fluffy knot that loads quickly and creates abundant lather, for which it has ample capacity. Tallow + Steel shaving soaps are excellent, as are their aftershaves, and their Dark has an unusual fragrance: “coffee, cocoa, ginger, and vetiver, combined with the sweetness of peppermint and benzoin.” The ingredients:

Stearic Acid + Tallow (from local, pasture-raised, 100% grass-fed cattle) + Water + Potassium Hydroxide + Sodium Hydroxide + Organic Castor Oil + Organic Glycerin + Organic Coconut Oil + Organic Avocado Oil + Lanolin + Silk + Essential Oils + Vitamin E

The lather was extremely good, and the 102 with a still-newish blade was a delight to use, smoothly and easily wiping the stubble from my face with no problem. A splash of Dark aftershave, and the weekend is no underway. The splash is moisturizing as splashes go:

Water + Witch Hazel + Organic Aloe Vera + Organic Glycerin + Organic Licorice Root + Organic Willow Bark + Organic Cucumber + Organic Rosemary + Polyglyceryl Oleate + Radish Root Ferment + Lactobacillus + Coconut Fruit + Essential Oils

This is a shake-before-each-use splash, which seems to be a rule with moisturizing splashes, perhaps due to the presence of oils in the splash.

  1. I may have mentioned this before but I have decided I prefer the 102 to the X3? An opinion which is of no value to anyone!

  3. Me 3. I think they both deliver super shaves but the X3 has a narrower angle of attack (IMHO) than the 102. Still use both though.
