Saying goodbyes when you move

with 3 comments

We’ve said goodbye to Passionfish, and I’ve said goodbye to Ocean Sushi and Tillie Gorst’s. Goodbyes will be frequent this coming week, the final week before the move, but let me note that tonight I said goodbye to my birthday (some years back) bottle of Hillrock Single Malt Whisky, Barrel 4, Master distiller Dave Pickwell, which my son gave to me. The final dram was timed perfectly.

But not so perfectly as the 100-sheet pack of cut parchment paper from King Arthur flour. I bought it more than a year ago, and this week I used the final sheet on the final batch of breakfast bites. It came out even! That’s a very good omen. As is, come to think of it, is the bird who flew full-speed into the glass balcony door and knocked itself senseless (so much The Wife thought it dead), but then shook itself off, got to its feet, and ventured forth once more.

It’s a good move, I say. An adventure.

We’re having Nigella Lawson’s Tarragon Chicken again, and even on this second try I find I know a lot more about how to go about it. Chop the tarragon leaves, for example.

It’s in the oven now, and from last time I know it takes 40 minutes.

  1. You’re moving? If so, I hope all goes well. That must be a big change after living in the same area for a long time. Moving can be a pain in the neck, but also can be the start of a new adventure, as you noted. I hope you continue blogging after your move. Your blog is one of the best around.

  2. Ok, read in your other post that you are moving to B.C. Man, that is an adventure, a big, awesome, totally cool adventure! IMHO, at least. The trips up there with friends from the Monterey Bay area are among my fondest memories. There are some stunningly beautiful places there, and the people are really nice, too. I hope you find BC equally agreeable. Happy trails, Leisureguy!

  3. @Tbone: Thank you very much. The Wife is from BC and went to UVic. Her brother and sister-in-law live on Salt Spring Island and her niece lives there up-island a bit and commutes to a job in Victoria. Plus The Wife has friends who live there. The only oddity is becoming ferry-dependent, something with which I have no experience but The Wife knows well.

At any rate, the packers come one week from today, and we’re almost ready. The Eldest will drive our car and The Wife, Molly, and I will fly ahead. We have our apartment there, with new mattresses and a desk already in place. 🙂

I’m a tea drinker now, so nice to have lots of tearooms. I hope the fires will have died down: air quality was bad last week from wildfires.
