Barrister & Mann Reserve shaving soap: Wow

with 7 comments

Still working from the Sharpologist article on the best shaving soaps, this morning I used Barrister & Mann’s Reserve Spice shaving soap (and matching aftershave). B&M describe the fragrance as “notes of carnation, nutmeg, vanilla, and tonka bean,” and its a fragrance I like (probably because of the vanilla double-hit from both vanilla and tonka bean).

The lather really is exceptional. I had barely started work on the puck with my Fine Classic brush when a thick lather formed. I applied it to my beard and added some water: a great lather. I’m tempted now to get the Lavender, but I’m trying to be disciplined. The Reserve shaving soap really is noticeably better in terms of lather than the other B&M shaving soaps.

With the Progress, I easily achieved a perfectly smooth result with no problems, and a splash of Reserve Spice aftershave finished the job. Great way to launch the weekend.

  1. You should try the Lavender! My favorite lavender scent and not by a little bit. Fantastic. It’d be glad to send a little sample if you’d like.

  2. No need. I can take a hint. 🙂 Order placed. Thanks for the nudge.

BTW, if you haven’t tried any of Phoenix Artisan’s CK-6 soaps, I highly recommend those. (See yesterday’s SOTD.)

  3. I haven’t yet but I’ve been seeing pretty much universal raves for it. I’ll have to give it a try soon.

  5. I’ll be interested in your take on it. Were I to order a second tub (to, you know, have a spare…), I would order Reserve Classic. I have Reserve Classic aftershave already, so I’d save the cost of the aftershave, so that right there….

  6. I did not go with the aftershave. I have been using Thayer’s Rose Petal and Kempert’s almost exclusively? Where does Barrister ship from, I did not see a contact address on the website.

  7. From the US. And Maggard’s is clear: No shipping of aftershave. I’m looking at D.R. Harris Lavender Water but it’s quite dear.
