Multivitamins are a waste of money

with one comment

And so, we learn, are probiotic capsules. (Note post earlier today: fresh vegetables and fresh fruit are excellent probiotics.)

  1. As to supplements, I’m in the middle lane. Supplements are unnecessary and wasteful if there is no identifiable need. And they certainly don’t cure cancer or Alzheimer’s Disease. LOL. Fresh produce is preferred to supplementation, but too many of us eat insufficient produce grown on soils that are depleted.

Everyone’s body is different. If one’s body does not assimilate all the necessary vitamins and minerals from a good diet (for whatever reason), then supplementation is reasonable, prudent, and necessary. Pregnant women were mentioned as benefitting from supplementation. I would add most folks over age 50.

Let’s not overlook there can be a placebo effect from supplementation, even from dubious forms of supplementation. If we think we benefit, we may in fact benefit. The mind has a curious and poorly understood influence on the physical body.

Supplementation in moderation is inexpensive insurance. The best spent money is spent on our minds and physical bodies. Other supplements are fresh air, pure water, vigorous mental and physical exercise, a balanced and adequate diet, adequate rest, social contacts, and hobbies that are active and serious.

I’m 82 years old. I’ve outlived my male relatives by over 20 years. I’ve taken daily supplements for 30 years. I take a multivitamin (that includes iron, as I’m an 85% vegan). I rotate among brands to access different formulations. I take a daily antioxidant, rotating weekly among vitamin E, Pycnogenol, and alpha-lipoic acid.
