HP printer support is god-awful

leave a comment »

I picked up some malware on my HP OfficeJet — I think the infected software is in the printer itself. I have the HP app on my Mac that allows me to control the printer, but I am also locked out of that.

When I try to print, I get a message. Either it’s “PDE.plugin will damage your computer” or “Inkjet4.driver will damage your computer.” And nothing prints.

I try HP support.

a) phone call — some initial messages, call transferred, then dead silence for a few minutes. Then a ring, a click, and return to dead silence.

b) online chat with virtual assistant — not only worthless but actively frustrating. It’s worse than nothing and seems to reflect HP’s massive contempt for its customers.

c) “community” forum — HP’s effort to externalize support costs by having customers provide support. I saw several Mac users with the same problem and with no responses.

So my printer is now just a brick. I had had good experience with HP printers in the past, but things change and their absolute refusal to support their products indicates that I should find another brand for my next printer.

I’m going to try uninstalling and reinstalling all printer software, but I’m not hopeful. From what I’ve read, this sort of malware is designed to resist deinstallation.

UPDATE: I finally got it to working. I did uninstall all HP software from computer. The old printer utility I had is gone but the new one looks workable. I used search engines heavily and found on the HP site a way to update the printer firmware. I was unable to do that from the computer, but was able to do it from the printer’s own control screen.

One of those cleared the problem, and I just printed a document. What a relief — but also what frustration in trying to deal with HP support.

A Dark shave in deference to today’s weather

Today’s forecast here is for heavy rain and the sky is completely overcast, so Dark seemed to be the theme suggested by Nature. This Sabini Persian Jar design has an ebony handle and an excellent knot, which seemed to love Tallow + Steel’s Dark shaving soap. I really like the fragrance (described on the lid in the photo above).

The Edwin Jagger head is quite good, and with three passes my face was smooth once more. A splash of Dark aftershave to finish the job, and now we wait to see what the day portends — and probably will wait for several days, given the large number of mail ballots to be counted.
