The very excellent Fine slant and an excellent collaboration between Declaration Grooming and Chatillon Lux

with 8 comments

That Omega 21762 boar brush is a wonderfully soft and gentle brush, and well-loaded with Declaration Grooming’s bison-tallow formula of Unconditional Surrender made a fine fragrant lather.

Fine’s slant is one of the best slants available and a total joy if you use the correct angle (handle far from the face so the razor rides the cap and not the guard) and light pressure (the razor itself is light, so a good reminder) and a brand of blade good for you in that razor. With three easy passes, I had a totally smooth face.

Chatillon Lux is responsible for the fragrance,, and their aftershave lotion/splash is not only fragrant but also very nice for the skin. A great finish to a fine shave.

  1. Michael,

With my super-large rotation, I probably won’t be trying that one soon, though I would like to. I have the Rose Santal–not always available for sale–and whoever made the first of that scent combination is a fragrance genius! They make some seriously good stuff; the soap’s performance is as wonderful as the aroma. The Yuzu Rose Patchouli, likewise.

  2. I also am fond of Yuzu Rose Patchouli. I’ll look for Rose Santal. I was just thinking I wanted a good rose shaving soap.

  3. I am afraid that the soap may not have been produced or was a limited edition. For a time the EdT was available, reappeared at Maggard Razors and then went out of stock. Chatillon Lux need to start making it again! I must have been thinking of YRP when I was thinking of the soap vis a vis the EdT (and in this case, the balm; I never got a splash).

There was a review of Rose Santal on Reddit in 2017. Sorry about its non-availability.

  4. No problem. I was thinking about getting the EDT but it’s somewhat pricey. I’ll use YRP tomorrow. Would love to get it in the Milksteak formulation. 🙂

  5. I am a bit red-faced; just checked at Maggard Razors and found this:

Chatillon Lux Rose Santal Eau de Toilette, 2oz
    5.00 out of 5based on 1customer rating(1 customer review)
    $60.00

    They still have it!

  6. I also found it at Top of the Chain here in Canada. But, as I say, it’s pricey. If I could get a soap as well, maybe…

  7. Michael, I hope you will forgive one last remark. While searching for a puck of PAA Chocolate Bourbon shaving soap, I ran across a puck of Grooming Dept Incense and Rose shaving soap (unfortunately out of stock at West Coast Shaving) and to my nose, off the puck it smells very close to the above-mentioned EdT of Rose Santal. Let this be the knot with which I tie this off…

  8. Peter, I like getting comments on the blog and like even more getting tips on good soaps. I’ll be looking for that one. Thanks.
