    Electronic leashes can be put in airplane mode while on the ground, too. It makes things nice and peaceful.

  2. Probably the fear is that if you do that, you are showing a bad attitude and lack of commitment. Toxic cultures such as he describes are awash with fear (organizational fear), which works strongly against the establishment of a supportive culture. Common manifestations include the fear of seeming not a team player, fear of showing weakness, fear of revealing ignorance (which leads to bluffing and bad decisions), fear of seeming uncertain (which leads to jumping to conclusions and hast action, fear of showing compassion (because some view compassion as weakness), and so on.
