La Toja is terrific

with 5 comments

I really like La Toja shaving soap, which seems to come only as a shaving stick (fine with me). I don’t know whether the mineral salts from the famous springs there are in fact what makes the difference, but I’ll give them credit. It’s a terrific soap that makes an exceptional lather, effective in the shave and leaves you skiin feeling great.

The lather today was with a Maggard 24mm synthetic brush, and stubble removal relied on The Holy Black’s SR-71 slant, a Merkur 37 clone with a much more hefty handle.

Three passes, and then a splash of La Toja’s Hombre aftershave, which I also like a lot — IMO it’s an aftershave worth seeking out.

Altogether a fine way to kick off the weekend.

  3. La Toja has a light, fresh fragrance, very pleasant and far from overpowering, but still attractive. I can’t narrow it down to specifics — second-rate nose — but I like it. It doesn’t demand attention, but it’s there and doing a good job.

Hombre has more fragrance, and quite pleasant, but it seems to have been discontinued, alas.

  4. Post Script: IME a dramatically heftier handle increases the aggressiveness/effectiveness of a razor.

Do you notice such an increase with the SR-71 over the Merkur 37?

  5. Not really. I still keep the pressure on my face pretty light. The razor was a little bitey this morning, but I think that just means it’s time to change the blade.
