Brush coming along and I like D.R. Harris

with 4 comments

You will note that this morning I used the DOC razor that matches the brush handle. And the knot really feels quite different this morning, much friendlier to the lather.

I used MR GLO as the pre-shave since I’m using a shave stick, Marlborough by D.R. Harris in this case. Ieasily worked up a fine lather and, as noted, the brush accepted the lather readily. Three passes with the razor easily and comfortably removed all roughness, and a splash Marlborough finished the shave with the wonderful woody fragrance.

Spring is advancing quickly. This is one of eight trees ranked in front of the apartment building. This one’s on the end, so it caught the morning sun while the other trees were still shaded by the building. I’ll take an afternoon photo soon to capture the full glorious length of the row.

  1. Michael, the beauty of that tree is outstanding! It reminds me of the ancient saying, paraphrased, “Consider the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet King Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.” I guess that profound principle applies to trees too.

I have a dental appointment tomorrow. When I make a medical or dental appointment I’m often told not to wear after shave or cologne. Tomorrow I plan to use a bit of scent-benign Thayer’s Witch Hazel, instead of the Dapper Doc’s Old Time Lilac & Fig that I’m wearing today. Why don’t doctors and dentists like their patients to “smell good?” Is fragrance over-hyped?

Your interest in safety razors largely has evolved from vintage to modern. I’ve always been a vintage guy for nostalgic reasons, but I’m starting to drift in your direction. One reason is the four-pass shave my tough old whiskers got this morning from the Parker Variant set at a modest 2.5 was as outstanding as that tree at your apartment building!

  2. Imagine an entire street with such trees on both sides — common here.

Some people are quite sensitive to fragrances in an allergy-like way. Others like fragrances. When I traveled (especially in airplanes) I would use Thayers witch hazel aftershave, which has no fragrance.

Yeah, I think modern razors have added some refinements, in part because of better design tools (CAD, 3-D printing for prototypes, CDC machining (of razor or mold), etc.).

  3. Speaking of modern razors, have you tried the Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr.? This humble and moderately-priced TTO looks like a superspeed clone but shaves (for me) much better. It is a mild razor that tames the sharpest blades and provides a very close shave. Priced at $18,97 with free shipping at Amazon. Given the price, I had modest expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Vendor stated is is constructed of “premium high-end brass” and I believe that in view of the razor’s weight.

  4. Not only not tried, not heard of. I have one on the way now.
