Vikings Blade Chieftain and l’Occitane Cade

with 9 comments

A while back a reader commented that they like l’Occitane Cade shaving soap. When I had previously tried it using a badger brush I found that I didn’t get all that great a lather, and would use a combination of the soap and l’Occitane Cade shaving cream to make a superlather, which worked well. He suggested that a synthetic knot might solve the problem, and I recalled how Barrister & Mann specifically recommend a synthetic knot for their Reserve line of shaving soaps.

So, nothing loath, I acquired a new puck of l’Occitane Cade shaving soap and tried it this morning, using the most synthetic knot I have, this Yaqi Cashmere knot — not actually cashmere, of course, but just their name for the fiber, probably because of it dense, smooth feel.

And lo! the lather was as good a lather as one could want. (There are potential confounding factors, of course: they might in the meantime have improved the formula, and/or I might in the meantime have become better at loading and lathering.) Still, it was a seriously fine lather, always a pleasure. I’ll try later using a badger brush to see whether things go as well.

This is a new razor, purchased on Mantic59’s recommendation: the Vikings Blade Chieftain. Mantic59 knows what he’s talking about: this US$25 razor is absolutely first-rate. It is well constructed (and the head covers the blade’s end tabs, something I appreciate), and its feel and performance are uncommonly good: extremely comfortable while still being quite efficient. I will add that the presentation is also excellent: it comes in a very nice box that is suitable for gift-giving.

I easily achieved a BBS result with total comfort. The comfort of the razor encouraged somewhat more rapid strokes, which may help cutting action.

I’m adding this to my list of recommended razors, and thanks to Mantic59 for pointing it out in Sharpologist.

A final rinse, a splash of Cade EDT as an aftershave, and another bright shiny new day begins.
