Unexpected walk

leave a comment »

It was an aerobics day, but an aerobics day is not bad. Plus I didn’t think I was going to walk at all. I really didn’t feel like it, but storms are predicted for the next couple of days, so if no walk today, then I have a string of too many no-walk days.

As I expected, once I was out walking, I got into the swing of it and started to enjoy it — and indeed I enjoyed the entire walk. I thought at first that I’d just walk up the hill and back down to a street and cut over to home, but then when I got to that street I was enjoying my walk, so I thought I’d continue and cut over at a street farther down the hill. And then when I got there, I still was enjoying the walk and decided simply to continue for the usual 2.6 mile route.

I do notice, though, that I was walking a bit slower than my usual speed. I’ll take that as my lazy-day walk.

Things change: Budget calendar constants

leave a comment »

Back in the day, calculations were made by hand, so to ease that effort certain constants were adopted. Some constants clearly were constant: a week was 7 days and a year was 12 months. Those were given. But others values were rounded.

For example, a year was taken to be 365 days (or 52 weeks) rather than 365.25 days (or 52.18 weeks).  A month was taken to be 30 days rather than 30.44 days (365.25/12), means that a month has, on average, 4.35 weeks.

I just realized that since nowadays spreadsheets do all the heavy lifting in calculations, we can readily use more accurate and more precise values for calendar constants. So I updated the text of my budget plan to recommend using “true” values (true averages, to two decimal places) in spreadsheet calculations. Spreadsheets don’t care, and accuracy is improved.

So if you have your own budget spreadsheet, try using these averages as the values:

Since Google Sheets, like most spreadsheet programs, allows you to name a cell, I use names for the most common constants: “wksinyr” instead of “52.18”, “daysinmon” instead of “30.44”, and “wksinmon” instead of “4.35”.

Dapper Doc and the Starcraft meet Lo Storto

with one comment

The luxury of a fine and fragrant lather is one factor in changing shaving from a task to a pleasure, and Dapper Doc provides the pleasure today, along with my Starcraft brush. The entire lathering process, from loading the brush to adding a tiny bit of water as I worked up the lather on my face, was totally enjoyable.

Fatip’s Lo Storto slant is a pleasure to use, and in three passes I easily recovered a perfectly smooth face, to which I applied a splash of Dapper Doc aftershave with a couple of squirts of Hydrating Gel.

The tea this morning is Murchie’s Ceylon Kenilworth: “a bright and oaky Orange Pekoe, with body and strength. The Kenilworth Estate is known for producing creamy teas with rich, full body.”
