Sophie passed away last night around 10:30 pm. The vet called and said that she was just too weak to continue the fight. We’re devastated. It happened so quickly: in on Monday for a teeth cleaning, died on Tuesday. Sophie was 3, still young and full of curiosity, filled with love and affection, and totally trusting. She was happy, and she greeted visitors by immediately throwing herself prone and squirming in what she hoped was a fetching manner, to get them to pet her. She would then roll over and present an amazing expanse of tummy to be rubbed. She would sit quite properly at other times, her white paws looking like little Mary Janes, neatly placed side by side or crossed demurely. Her coat was generous and required brushing and thinning, but it was glorious, with a fine ruff and made her look as though she were wearing pantaloons on her back legs. In appearance, she seemed to have much of a Norwegian Forest Cat. She will be missed so much.

Sophie on oxygen

Sophie oxygen

Sophie’s better, but she still tires very easily, still requires oxygen and must be covered to keep her warm, and needs intravenous feeding and fluids. She’ll remain at the vet’s tonight. The Wife took this photo with her cellphone when she went to visit Sophie at the end of the day.

Sophie better

Sick Sophie 1 Sick Sophie 2 Sick Sophie 3

Terrible photos, but news good. Photos made with camera phone and a trembling hand.

Sophie is responsive now: she meows, she can look at you, she twitches her tail, and she can move her legs a little. She’s still quite weak and is resting, getting oxygen, and getting nutrients. She’s covered to conserve heat. The Wife is holding her in the photos and sent about 10 minutes petting her until it was time to put Sophie back in the cage and hook her up once more. She’ll see Sophie again in three or four hours, and then Sophie will remain at the vets for another night.

Signs are hopeful.

Sophie crisis

with 5 comments

Sophie

Sophie is in a coma. She had had some trouble eating, and when we took her to the vet, it turned out that her gums were infected and her teeth badly needed cleaning. For cats, this requires a general anesthetic. When Sophie was a little baby kitten, she had another bad gum infection under her baby teeth, which caused a fever. She was put under then, and the teeth removed, and she recovered fine.

This time, though, her heart stopped as soon as she went under. They were able to restart her heart, and she is on oxygen and getting fluids and nutrients intravenously. She was rigid for some hours and breathing rapidly, and then they gave her Valium. She relaxed and her breathing slowed to normal.

A vet tech spent the night with her—our vet does not have a portable oxygen tent, so Sophie couldn’t be transferred to the emergency vet hospital. The tech reported that around 5:00 or 6:00 Sophie seemed to respond to petting, but she’s again non-responsive.

We’re going to go there to be with her for a while. It’s a very hard situation. She did have to have her teeth cleaned, and the anesthetic worked fine the first time. But that early infection—or perhaps her own constitution—seems to have made her health somewhat delicate. There’s no one to be angry at, and there’s no alternate course we could have taken. I keep trying to fix it—when we visited Sophie yesterday, I insisted we take her little lambs-wool duster (a toy which she often treats as a kitten), thinking somehow that if she smelled it, she would come out of the coma. Magical thinking. Feeling desperate. We both feel scared.

Sophie burrito

leave a comment »

Sophie is having to take meds orally—squirted into her little outraged kitty mouth with a syringe. She doesn’t really seem to care for that, and after she gouged a chunk out of my hand in her frantic efforts to escape, we are now wrapping her in a towel, making (as The Wife says) a Sophie burrito. That works pretty well. Today is the last day. Thank God.

Sophie on chair

Sophie, waiting patiently for Windows to make its little “goodbye” song when the computer is  shut down. This signals the end of the workday, when at last Sophie can get the attention she so much enjoys. As soon as the song plays, Sophie runs in from wherever she is, mrking madly, and squirms about for a thorough petting. (“Mrking” is the name we give the sequence of small, short, vari-toned meows she makes, very much as if she were talking. Sometimes she makes these to herself, as she plays with something interesting (e.g., a crumpled piece of paper, a cable tie, or the like), and sometimes she directs them to The Wife, as if she’s telling her something important.)

Sophie asleep with tummy

Miss Sophie, sound asleep with her tummy ready to be gittied.  When The Wife did touch the tummy, Sophie exclaimed and jumped. She (Sophie) thought it was a rude awakening.

Sophie in window

Sophie likes to sit in the window and check on what’s happening in the greater world, especially if what’s happening involves birds.

Sophie, inside out

Sophie, inside out

Here’s Sophie, getting comfortable in her bed—which in this case involves squirming herself into an arresting position. But a good Friday afternoon cat-blogging photo, I think.

Sophie plans to have a good weekend and hopes that your weekend also is relaxing.

Sophie figures it out

leave a comment »

Sophie in bed

Sophie in her new bed. This bed formerly was Megs’s, but Megs never could figure out that the idea was to get into it. So it went to Sophie, whose first response (of course) was to sniff it. Then she grabbed the lining to pull it out, and knocked the thing over on its side. Sophie always thinks that establishing dominance is an important early step, so after some sniffing, she beats up a new object. Eventually, though, she figured out that she could get into it, curl up, and get warm—and she figured that out in a matter of hours. Now: does this mean that Sophie is smarter than Megs?

Yes.

Sophie finds a new spot

Sophie’s new spot

Kitties seem to have favorite spots, and these favorites change over time. They also seem to be constantly on the lookout for a new spot. Sophie found a cozy little spot right there, under the desk. She looks slightly paranoid, but then, these days, who isn’t?

Sophie caught napping

Sophie asleep

Sophie’s much more active than Megs, but she still honors the tradition of taking naps in odd and uncomfortable places. Here she is with her head hanging off the edge of the desk, so sound asleep she didn’t stir even when the camera came out and photo was made. (Normally if the camera’s in view, she’ll trot right over to sniff it.)

Sophie drawer

Cats are eternal optimists, always expecting to find some prey. Evolution must have selected for that: pessimistic cats wouldn’t hunt and wouldn’t reproduce. Here’s Sophie checking out the pencil drawer (again). Maybe this time…

Sophie, birdwatcher

leave a comment »

The Wife reports that a bird couple seem to be building a nest just outside her bedroom window: lots of twittering and flying back and forth. Sophie, of course, is fascinated, but apparently realizes that if she jumps up on the windowsill to watch, she’ll scare the birds away. So she stands very tall, puss-in-boots style, and just peeks through the edge of the curtain to watch them. Her attitude is more one of watching pets than prey, but who knows what goes on in that little brain? Her little lamb duster seems to alternate between being her kitten and a mouse.

Megs’s favorite canned food

with one comment

This is cool: I found Megs’s food on Amazon. She loves this food—if I mix it with the Cat-Man-Doo extra-large dried bonito flakes. And, to my surprise, that second link is to the very store in PG where we buy the stuff. Amazing. The Web in my own backyard.

Posh Pets is important to us because it is where The Wife found Sophie. Well, in fact, it was I who found Sophie, and pointed out the very pretty little girl kitten who was sitting quietly with her paws neatly crossed while her cagemate bit off her whiskers. Whiskers all grown back now, and Sophie is now a very, very BIG girl. But still cute, and still crosses her paws when she’s sitting quietly.

Sophie 1 on cardboard Sophie 2 on cardboard

Two camera-phone photos of Sophie resting on her very own piece of cardboard. I rather like these photos, which to me resemble paintings: interesting coloration, slightly impressionistic…

I’ll be away for the day, so take this opportunity to reread the comprehensive guide to gourmet shaving (link “my shaving knowledge” at the right). 🙂

Sophie & BFF

leave a comment »

Sophie BFF

Sophie and her BFF, a little lamb’s wool duster, which she loves. Sometimes she treats it like a kitten, sometimes like a mouse toy. Eventually, enough wool is pulled out as she tosses it about that a new duster must be called into service.

Sophie’s little mouth is partly open because she’s making her littler “mrk” sound: small, conversational little meows, made in a varied sequence of tones, as if speaking.

Some nights The Wife will wake up from a sound sleep to find the little wool duster tucked in beside her head. Sophie, taking care of her BFF.

Sophie: she has her strengths

with 2 comments

Lovability, for one. Example: The Wife calls to say that Sophie’s sitting on top of the hutch, doing a good job of cleaning her butt, one leg stuck straight up in the air, when a bird comes by the window. Sophie sees the bird, starts watching it—leg still stuck straight up in the air. Slowly, Sophie sits up at attention—leg still stuck in the air, but it starts to drift down, and the paw passes in front of her face, surprising her. So she bites it.
