Sophie’s Tree

Sophie tree 1 Sophie tree 2

As promised previously: photos of Sophie enjoying her new tree. The surfaces used on the ledges seems highly attractive to her, and she also likes the scratching surface provided at the base. Altogether, a very successful installation. And now she can get up on the hutch easily, and get down without plummeting into a face-plant. But she seems to prefer the new perch to the hutch.

Sophie’s new kitty tree all set up

with 3 comments

This kitty tree is extremely well made and well designed. It does help to have two people assembling it, just for discussions of the assembly diagram, which holes should get dowels, etc. The 3 pair of braces are each different, because each pair must fit a particular curve of the upright piece. Excellent quality fasteners, and you can disassemble it if you’re ever so inclined. Actual wood, not particle-board (cf. Ikea, which I’m told is Swedish for “crap”).

Now Sophie can easily get on top of the hutch and, more important, can get down without doing a face-plant.

Photos will follow in time.

The Wife just called to report that Sophie, not the smartest cookie in the jar, is VERY slowly figuring out the kitty tree, and how to get up it, etc. Lots of decisions and rests for pondering.

A surprise for Sophie

with one comment

Sophie has been quite excited recently because, as The Wife gets ready for bed a little mirror on her bedside table will reflect light from the beside lamp and make little flickering lights on the ceiling. Sophie thinks this is just terrific—it’s like seeing the best fireworks display in the world, so far as she’s concerned. And so every night she rushes in to get a good seat and settles herself and waits for the light show. A simple girl, but charming.

So when I heard this, I immediately went Googling, and today this arrived:

Sophie surprise

The mirrored ball rotates, the little multi-colored LED lights shine up on it (or down: you can hang the thing from the ceiling, of course) and the lights are reflected all over the room. The Wife will present it to Sophie tonight. I wanted to send along an ABBA CD, too, but I don’t have anything like that. I think Sophie will be very pleased. I told The Wife it was okay to let Sophie think it came from her.

Sophie on the chaise lounge

Sophie on chaise Sophie on chaise again

Sophie taking her ease on the arm of the chaise. She’s being a calm kitty, but you can tell she’s looking around for something to do. LOTS more energy than little Miss Megs.

Sophie’s Christmas

Sophie checks paper Sophie bites paper Sophie with paper Sophie on her paper Sophie hips

For Sophie, Christmas is all about paper. In the first two photos, she’s checking out the paper for quality—inspecting it, biting it. Then she pulls down paper that passes spec and makes herself comfortable.

In the last photo, Sophie is pondering new year’s resolutions and her hips.

Cat communication

with one comment

So yesterday The Wife is reading on her chaise lounge, and suddenly Sophie gets on top of the china cabinet, which she knows is not allowed. The Wife stands up, and Sophie jumps down and gets into petting position. (It’s necessary to actually stand up. You can say, “Sophie, get down” until you’re blue in the face with absolutely no effect on Sophie.)

So The Wife settles back to read. The Sophie gets into the (empty, inactive) fireplace and starts banging around on the metal curtains. This was formerly not allowed, but The Wife’s given up on that—but Sophie hasn’t realized it. For example, when she sneaks into the fireplace and her tail hits the metal curtains, causing a sound, she freezes for a while, until she figures the coast is clear.

Finally, Sophie, getting no reaction to the ostentatious fireplace invasion, gives up and jumps on top of the bookcase—also not allowed. The Wife gets up, and Sophie immediately jumps down and gets into petting position. (She always does this, just in case.)

The Wife goes into the kitchen and checks. Empty food bowl.

Megs in a basket

leave a comment »

Megs in a basket

Kitties like to be in things. For Sophie, last night that was the closet. She’s in so much trouble today after breaking into the closet, pulling down some shirts, and in general acting as if everything there was hers—as, of course, she believes. And how do you punish her? You can’t have her sit in the corner, staring at the wall, since kitties rather enjoy that and will, from time to time, talk to the wall. Especially corners, which are fascinating.

No, punishment doesn’t work. But Sophie’s pouting, since she knows that something went wrong and she figures it must be The Wife’s fault.

Sophie getting ready to ship

with one comment

Sophie box

You know about cats and cardboard, right? Here’s Sophie getting herself ready to be shipped to some distant destination—the kitchen, perhaps, or the study, or even the bedroom. (Her worldview is somewhat circumscribed, especially since we’ve become more careful in opening the door and know to look under the bench beside the door.)

Sophie, interrupted in thought

Sophie with paws

Sophie, interrupted in the midst of pondering. The Wife says that kitties who cross their paws are always interesting and fun. Sophie was originally spotted as little tiny kitten, sitting much like this, with her paws crossed, while her cagemate bit off her whiskers.

Sophie, inscrutable

Sophie

Maybe “inscrutable” isn’t the word. Ineffable? Indomitable? Incredible? Insomniac?

Sophie greets a visitor

with 3 comments

Sophie initial greeting Sophie ready for phase 2

Sophie is a charming but naive little enormous girl. When a visitor enters, she immediately throws herself on the floor, squirming in what she believes is a “pet me, pet me” pose. Note that she offers lots of warm, furry kitty tummy to rub, and she delivers on the promise: you can rub her tummy, tickle her armpits, play with her paws—whatever. She adores being petted.

Finally, she’ll stagger up, and rush into the living room and throw herself onto the chaise lounge, ready for phase 2 petting: the same thing, only more so. When she’s had enough, she’ll squirm to the edge and slide off to land on her head.

Very endearing, but I fear she’s a candidate for the short bus. Still, she does have her rules and standards. I tried the other day to go directly to phase two. She was willing to follow me into the living room, but she stoutly remained on the floor for the phase 1 petting—wouldn’t consider getting up onto the chaise until phase 1 was completed.

I mean, you start with skipping phase 1, and it’s a slippery slope that ends who knows where?

Sophie at rest

Sophie at rest

Here’s an unusual photo: Sophie, baffed out. But she still manages to be cute—and large. I’m taking care of her while The Wife is in Boston, and I have to say that Sophie is an exceptionally affectionate kitty…

Sophie headrest

Friday cat-blogging: Sophie looking adorable

leave a comment »

Sophie asleep on hutch

Sophie is not just all beauty and no brains. When she was a much younger kitty, she had to take some foul-tasting medicine via a syringe. I rinsed the syringe out and left it on the kitchen counter. When the time came for the next dose, the syringe was not to be found, and Sophie, of course, looked as if butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth. Fortunately, there was a spare syringe, which was put away after rinsing. The missing syringe never, ever turned up.

During the day, the bedroom door is shut, so that Sophie will stay out in the main part of the apartment. On days when The Wife, who works at home, must drive up for a day of meetings, Sophie has taken to hiding under the bed. Not a problem. First, she doesn’t hide all that well: usually her tail is hanging out. Second, there’s a toy in the bedroom, and all The Wife has to do is call to Sophie and throw the toy out into the hall. Sophie bounds after it, door is shut, Bob’s your uncle. Today, however, The Wife discovered that Sophie had taken the toy under the bed with her. 🙂 Clever kitty.

Kitty food weirdness

leave a comment »

Sophie has decided that she doesn’t like the Wellness Salmon kibble that she’s been happily eating ever since she arrived. So The Wife stopped by the pet store in Pacific Grove, and find that they’ve heard of this little problem. They provided 10 sample packets of kibble, with instructions to put them in little piles along the floor and see which one(s) the kitty would eat. The Wife reports:

The problem with free samples is that they’re not necessarily things you would choose yourself. Some of the samples didn’t seem that healthy – rice as one of the top ingredients, for example. I chose the 3 that seemed best:

– alternate flavour of Wellness
– Natural Balance “regular”
Natural Balance venison and green peas (those are the only ingredients!)

Remember, she was hungry… but she sniffed all three carefully, then started in on the venison, then alternated between that and the NB regular – cleaned up both of those, and didn’t touch the Wellness. And she was still hungry, because I put some NB venison down in her bowl afterward and she chowed down – she just came in to the living room and burped.

So: no more Wellness for Sophie—at least for a while. Both kitties like the Hill’s Science Diet t/d (the big kibble), luckily.

Kitty report on big kibble

leave a comment »

Both Megs and Sophie like the big kibble. In fact, Sophie promptly chewed down the entire handful, carefully picking it out of the smaller kibble, then came into the study, jumped up on the desk, and burped. Sophie is not what you would call a “refined” kitty.

Cat blogging: where Sophie once fit

with 2 comments

Sophie

Sophie used to fit in this little space, and she sees no reason why she won’t still fit. The Wife has expanded the space somewhat, but as you can see, it’s still a tight fit—though not so tight that Sophie can’t take a little nap.
